Regulation for Ph.D. programme – Admission

1. PREAMBLE

One of the primary objectives of Ph.D. programme at Atmiya University is to prepare the students for high level research and develop a set of core skills in them to work with efficiency in the various areas of Science, Management, Pharmacy and Engineering. This includes the ability to independently apply methodologies of scientific research as well as to create new scientific knowledge. Further, the candidate should demonstrate an ability to critically analyze research findings and to understand their importance in the relevant context. Skills to undertake and to effectively communicate research results are needed in order to succeed in postgraduate studies. Thus, it is important to assume an adequate knowledge and understanding of the problems, research methodologies, historical developments, theory formulation and societal importance of the scientific disciplines which are related to the candidate’s own research field. However, in order to attain the above standards, and procedures that are most likely to lead to a successful doctoral program must be in place.

2. Minimum Eligibility criteria for admission to Ph.D.

2.1 CATEGORIES OF Ph.D. SCHOLARS

  1. Full-time Research Scholars

  2. Part-time Internal Research Scholars

  3. Part-time External Research Scholars

2.2 ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO FOR Ph.D.

2.2.1

Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. programme shall have a Master’s degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.

2.2.2

A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master’s degree prior to 19 September, 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures.

2.2.3

Candidates who have successfully completed the M.Phil Degree with 55% marks or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed), shall be eligible to take admission to the Ph.D. degree. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50% or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/differently-abled categories.

3.0 ADMISSION PROCESS

3.1

The University shall admit Ph.D. (both Full Time and Part Time-Internal and External ) students through an Entrance Test consists of written, VIVA-VOCE AND PRESENTATION OF THEIR PROPOSED RESEARCH INTEREST.

3.2

The Atmiya University will:

3.2.1 decide on an biannual basis by adopting the predetermined strength (based on manageable number of Ph.D. scholars to be admitted depending on the number of available Research Supervisors and other academic and physical facilities available in the Uinversity.

3.3

The admission will be based on norms of the UGC and other statutory bodies concerned.

3.4

The Atmiya University will admit candidates by a two stage process through:

3.4.1

The Entrance Test (AUMPET) shall be qualifying test for admission with qualifying marks as 50%. The syllabus of the AUMPET shall consist of 50% of research methodology and 50% shall be subject specific–as per syllabus of paper II of *UGC NET/CSIR NET examination in concerned subject

3.4.1.3 For admission to Ph.D. programme the candidates who have qualified M.Phil./CSIR-NET/UGC-NET/ICAR/SET/GPAT/GATE examinations or candidates working in the sponsored research projects and FIP candidates, candidates with fellowship in MHRD/RGNF/CSIR/DST/ ICSSR etc. will be exempted from the written test.

3.4.2

An interview/viva-voce to be organized by the Atmiya University in which candidates shall discuss their research interest/area through a presentation before a duly constituted Departmental Research Committee (DRC). The committee will asses that whether the candidate possess the competence for the proposed research work, availability of facilities at the Department for proposed work and social relevance of the proposed work.
