The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) underscores value-based education, holistic development, ethical competence, and responsible citizenship as foundational goals of higher education. It calls for integrating knowledge, character formation and social responsibility into academic structures.
In response, the present Five-Year Integrated Ph.D. Programme in Consciousness Development & Value Education (CDVE) establishes a structured academic pathway for research grounded in Co-existential Philosophy (Madhyasth Darshan – Saha-Astitvavad), propounded by A. Nagraj (Amarkantak, Madhya Pradesh).
Consciousness Development refers to the systematic process of enabling individuals to gain clarity about the self (understanding of ‘I’), human conduct and harmonious coexistence with society and nature. It seeks to transform thought patterns, perceptions and behavioural tendencies through conceptual clarity, self-exploration and rational inquiry. The ultimate aim is the expression of awakened human consciousness in daily life manifested as ethical conduct, trustworthiness, responsibility and sustainable living. This philosophy is treated as a coherent ontological, epistemological, and axiological framework capable of academic reconstruction and applied research.
However, contemporary education systems often remain predominantly information-centric and career-oriented, with insufficient emphasis on empathy, ethical reasoning and self- awareness. This imbalance restricts holistic human development and contributes to social challenges such as mistrust, corruption, conflict of interest, unethical professional practices and erosion of constitutional and societal values.
The present doctoral programme addresses this gap by grounding advanced research to provide a systematic understanding of:
This doctoral framework seeks to address this imbalance by integrating philosophical inquiry, research methodology, pedagogical innovation and community engagement within a unified coexistential framework.
